Our skin is the ultimate multitasker and the toughest bodyguard, protecting our internal organs. As the largest and fastest-growing organ, it works overtime to protect us from external aggressors, including bacteria, infection, and, of course, the Indian weather! When our skin is healthy, it’s our biggest line of defence in preventing moisture loss, regulating our temperature, and reacting to pressure placed on our bodies. However, for most of us, in our attempts to maintain a healthy status quo, the importance of adequate skincare is often neglected.
By caring for your skin through suitable treatments and products, you will be helping to maintain your skin’s overall health. On top of this, finding the right skincare can help slow down the ageing process, reducing lines and wrinkles while resolving common problem skin issues including pigmentation, blemishes, and ingrown hairs. Through our Adgloskin years of helping clients with their skin, one of our favourite treatments has to be the alpha-hydroxyl acid peels in all the Adgloskin clinics, the benefits of which I will discuss in this blog.
How can chemical peels help your skin?
Chemical peels utilise an acid base, which gently removes the top layer, encouraging the process of cell renewal. Once the peel is applied to the skin, dead skin cells are removed in minutes, leaving you with healthier, fresher, and brighter-looking skin. As a bonus, skin peels can help your skincare products work more effectively, as the removal of dead skin cells allows the products to penetrate and be absorbed easily into your skin. What’s more, chemical peels can also prime the skin to be a better base for makeup to be applied.
Can chemical peels be used by everyone?
Many types of chemical peels can be customized to suit each client’s individual needs. An experienced practitioner will ensure that the peel they recommend suits your skin’s colour, texture, and needs. Chemical peels are generally categorised as mild, medium, and deep. Mild peels, including the Salycilic peel, do not penetrate below the epidermis (the top layer of the skin). Medium peels, such as TCA (trichloroacetic acid), reach the surface of the middle and thickest layer of the skin (the dermis), and deep peels, including phenolic chemical peels, reach the deeper levels of the dermis. Hence, chemical peels are the greatest help in doing skincare in a country like India, where the majority of the skin types are skin type 4, and chemical peels are best suited to treat any skin concerns and promote collagen formation over a period of time.
