Melasma affects more on skin type 4 women and men clients who have more melanin synthesis in their skin. Long-time exposure to the sun and hormonal changes are the real causes of melasma. It can be also seen post-pregnancy in clients. Generally, Dermatologists are experts in detecting melasma such as lentiginous or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The brown patches generally occur on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and sometimes on the nose as well. It spreads and looks like butterfly wings with irregular shapes.
Melasma is treated with medications and topical applications and is termed a chronic problem on the skin as it keeps coming back again and again. Generally, melasma treatments are done topically with yellow peel followed by oral medications. At Adgloskin sometimes a fractional laser might be used for skin re-surfacing.
Retinoid creams, hydroquinone, and corticosteroid topical applications are used to treat the concern which helps in controlling the melanin production on the surface of the skin. Chemical peels are also used to reduce the severity of the concern to de-pigment the skin and make it one shade lighter. Lactic and Glycolic acid peels are used in such cases and done every 15 days’ time for 6-8 sessions.
